ICOR: Resiliency Defined

The 21st Century Solution
The International Consortium for Organizational Resilience (ICOR) can help all organizations achieve resilience. Members of ICOR learn how to deliberately design resilience into their management of people, places, infrastructure and work processes necessary to meet the challenges of a 21st century world. ICOR provides a meaningful forum in which dedicated professionals can interact and contribute to the resiliency of their organizations as well as to the communities and countries in which they live and work.

Resilience is defined as “the property of a material that enables it to resume its original shape or position after being bent, stretched, or compressed.” (American Heritage Dictionary, Fifth Printing)Organizational resilience is a function of the overall vulnerability, situation awareness, and adaptive capability of an organization in a complex, dynamic, and interdependent system.  (McManus et al, in press)

Resilience is the ability of an organization to rebound following a crisis or a disaster event. It is the ability to absorb strain. Building resilience into organizations entails a shift from a reactive to a proactive approach for crisis management and disaster recovery.A resilient organization is one that is able to achieve its core objectives in the face of adversity.

It is not about responding to a one-time crisis or disaster event – it’s about continuously anticipating and adjusting to trends that can permanently impair the earning power of the organization.• Smart organizations have learned the hard lessons.

• Many other organizations just hope for the best.
• Hope is not a strategy.
• Organizational resilience is.

ICOR University’s 10 Disciplines provide educational opportunities that meet the needs of all members of all communities throughout the world.  Whether you are an executive running a large international organization, an emergency manager responsible for the safety of your local community, a government official, a relief agency worker or volunteer, a safety and security manager, an independent consultant, or a vendor, ICOR will provide you with what you need to make your organization or community more resilient and better able to face the challenges the world puts before each of us.
